Building a Business When Standard Advice Fails: A Neurodivergent Approach

ost business training assumes your brain handles information in a linear, predictable way. It tells you to build a five-year plan, map out a complex 12-step marketing funnel, and stick to a rigid 9-to-5 schedule.
If you’ve ever taken one of those "is self-employment right for you?" assessments, you might have been told you’re a terrible fit. I know I was. Yet, I’ve been crafting business schemes since I was a pre-teen and have been successfully self-employed in some shape or form ever since.
I am neurodivergent. I am smart, but I don't learn or work the way standard business culture says I should.
Over the years, I’ve worked with countless neurodivergent founders—many who lived in shame for years because they didn't have a formal diagnosis. Despite that weight, they still managed to put one foot in front of the other enough times to build a viable, successful business.
Now? They just want all these digital tools to actually work for them.
If you are a neurodivergent founder, a creative, or a non-profit leader in British Columbia, you already know that the standard business template usually just leads to task paralysis.
When things stall out, I consistently see three major roadblocks. None of them have anything to do with a lack of talent or passion:
The Inability to Start: Knowing exactly what you need to do, but hitting an invisible wall of resistance the second you try to sit down and do it.
Too Many Big Ideas: Having a brilliant, expansive vision, but getting so overwhelmed by the sheer volume of choices that you end up frozen, unable to pick a single path.
Trouble Staying on Track: Building great momentum for a week, only to lose steam the moment a system feels too rigid, boring, or restrictive to maintain.
When you hit these walls, it is incredibly easy to assume you are failing at being an entrepreneur. You aren't. You are just trying to run your business on software that wasn't written for your operating system.
Energy Management
True operational support isn't about forcing yourself into a neurotypical mold. It is about choosing accessible tech stacks and workflows that work with your current executive function.
Instead of bloated project management tools that require a degree to navigate, sustainable growth comes from simpler, highly visual, or automated setups. When I look at your digital operations, I focus on three specific shifts:
Designing a calendar that accounts for hyperfocus blocks and recovery time, rather than a rigid hour-by-hour schedule that triggers burnout.
Replacing multi-step processes with intuitive tools (like Notion, Asana, or simple automation) that reduce the number of clicks it takes to get an idea out of your head and into reality.
Marketing strategies that feel like an authentic conversation with your community, rather than a high-pressure performance.
Permission to use a few analog tools (because digital tools can be easily ignored).
Budget
You don’t need a massive corporate budget or an enterprise setup to get your business running smoothly. You also don't need a thousands-of-dollars guru program that leaves you with a mountain of homework and more overwhelm than when you started.
My approach to coaching is designed to be accessible, low-shame, and practical. We don't do rigid, overwhelming assignments. Instead, we collaborate to untangle the mess, organize your big ideas, and build simple, sustainable tech habits that feel good to use.
Whether we are cleaning up your website's SEO, auditing your digital setup for accessibility, or just building a workflow that keeps you from freezing up on Monday mornings, the goal is the same: smart, sustainable growth on your own terms.
